Natural Remedies for Acid Reflux

Acid Reflux

Acid reflux or Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD) is a condition in which the liquid content of the stomach refluxes into the esophagus. Among the symptoms, some of the most severe are hoarseness, wheezing, coughing or difficulty when it comes to swallowing food or liquids. This is usually caused by a diet with few vitamins and nutrients, overeating, drinking while eating or bad food combinations. Left untreated, this disease can lead to ulcers, scaring of the esophagus or infection of the throat and lungs.

There are various natural remedies you can try to help reduce the negative effects of acid reflux. It is recommended to sleep with your head higher than your stomach and to avoid lying down at least 3 hours after you have eaten. Eat 6 smaller meals a day instead of 3 big ones. Cut out carbonated beverages and fatty foods. Also avoid smoking, chocolate, caffeine and alcohol consumption because they cause damage to the stomach. If you lie on your left side when sleeping, you will help relieve heartburn, keeping your stomach free of harmful acids.

For something to drink while you're eating, mix a table spoon of apple vinegar in a glass of water. Be sure to include yogurt in your daily diet because it contains beneficial digestive bacteria. Figs, pineapple and papaya are good natural remedies recommended to people suffering from GERD because they contain digestive enzymes.
