Natural Remedies for Hangovers

Hangover

Medically known as veisalgia, a hangover is caused by the consumption of large quantities of alcohol. The quantity of alcohol in our blood is determined by how much and how fast we drink. The chemical reaction in your body from alcohol causes dehydration and depletion of Vitamins A, B (particularly B6) and C. The most common hangover symptoms are dry mouth, swollen or red eyes, nausea, vomiting or a dizzy feeling. Hangover symptoms often include disorientation and "the jitters".

The worse hangover are given by impurities in the alcoholic beverage called Congeners. Vodka and gin give a less severe hangover than whiskey or bourbon  because they involve a better filtering. To prevent hangovers, a few raw almonds before the intoxication seem to do the job. Eating peanut butter before drinking is a popular African remedy. One of the most natural remedies to prevent a hangover is water; drinking 2 or 3 glasses before bed will prevent the body from getting dehydrated. Drink lots of water even after you wake up.

It is recommended to eat before, while and after you are drinking. This will reduce the alcohol's rate of absorption and can help reduce the after-effects. Never drink on an empty stomach because food helps absorb some of the alcohol. Alternate alcoholic drinks with water stick to non-carbonated drinks because carbonation speeds up the alcohol's absorption process.
