Natural Remedies for Insomnia
Insomnia signifies a lack of sleep or difficulties to sleep or falling asleep. It is common to have occasional episodes when you cannot sleep, but insomnia refers to the sleeping difficulties on a regular basis. Other symptoms are emotional instability, loss of coordination and confusion. Insomnia may be caused by stress, anxiety, worries, overwork or other moments that cause mental tension. Suppressed feelings of resentment or anger may also cause insomnia.
Too much tea or coffee, constipation, eating at night, smoking are among the other causes of insomnia. Some post-menopausal women also experience sleep problems. There are powerful herbal remedies that act as a good cure for this sleeping disorder. Valerian (Valeriana officinalis) is well known for its abilities to cure insomnia. It is usually taken between an hour before bedtime and does not have an addictive effect. Side effects of Valerian may include indigestion, headache, and dizziness. Valerian should not be used in conjunction with alcohol, sedatives and antihistamines or before operating a machine.
Lettuce juice contains a sleep-inducing substance, called 'lectucarium' and is recommended in treating insomnia in a natural way. Milk is also often used as an alternative to sleep drugs. A milk with honey before bed does wonders in fighting insomnia because it acts as a tonic and tranquilizer. Honey by itself also effectively cures insomnia. Acting as a sleep inducing herbal remedy, honey should be before bed, two teaspoons in a large cup of water.
Regular exercise during the day or in the evening relaxes the body, enhancing the quality of sleep. The person suffering from insomnia should also try to eliminate stressful actives and find a hobby that is both relaxing and pleasurable.
