Natural Remedies for Sunburn
Sunburn is caused when the skin is overexposed to the harmful violet rays of the sun. Welding arcs or tanning lamps can also cause sunburn which can lead to serious complications. The effects of a sunburn do not appear immediately; the skin starts to become red and tender, blisters start to occur, and often fever, chill, nausea, rash and skin loss appear.
Melanin usually protects our skin from the excessive sun rays. People with a light skin have less melanin that those with a darker skin. However, if exposure to the sun exceeds the melanin's ability to protect the skin, sunburn occurs. The skin is more prone to sunburn if the person is on birth control pills or has used soaps with antibacterial agents.
The effects of a mild sunburn can be less severe if brief baths or showers are taken to cool the skin. Water that is too hot can strip the natural oils of the skin. You can also try placing towels soaked in cold water on the affected areas for 10 to 15 minutes. A good natural remedy for sunburned skin is a combination of Aloe Vera and vinegar that will stop inflammation and pain. Cut fresh cucumber slices and rub them on the affected area.
You can also apply lavender or peppermint oil on the skin to soothe it. Do not scrub your skin or shave it and use a soft towel to pat your skin dry. Before taking bath, add baking powder to the bath water because it will relax the skin. When we're tanning or stay in the sun for a longer time we lose water, that is why it is important to drink plenty of fluids and prevent dehydration.
